Known for her warmly lyrical, dramatically present timbre, communicative expression and instinctive musicality, soprano Lusila Mazi has performed in Opera and Concert stages across Europe, USA and Canada. Ms. Mazi made her debut in the role of Violetta Valery in Verdi's La Traviata, Opera in Concert at Teatro Sociale Bellinzona in Switzerland. Ms. Mazi has performed The Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute at Trentino Music Festival in Trentino, Italy and in Austin, Texas with Luke Housner's Summer Opera Workshop. She performed La Contessa Almaviva in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro at Conservatorio di Musica Luigi Cherubini Firenze, and debuted Donna Elvira from Mozart's Don Giovanni. In Tuscany, she performed Suor Angelica in Puccini’s Suor Angelica with Connecticut Lyric Opera’s Greve Music Festival in Greve-in-Chianti under the mentorship of acclaimed soprano Katia Ricciarelli, and Barbarina and Contessa Almaviva in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. In Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann, Ms. Mazi performed the role of Giulietta with Midwest Opera Institute in Bloomington, Illinois.
Ms. Mazi is passionate about bel canto and verismo, particularly for its revival in today’s musical landscape. Recent bel canto & verismo performances include Spain & the United States: Voice in Dialogue in Manhattan; Puccini Heroines Opera Gala at Consulate of Italy in Lugano, TASIS The American School in Switzerland, and San Biagio Church in Bellinzona. She has performed bel canto & verismo concerts for Amici della Scala di Lugano at Hotel Splendide Royal in Lugano, Charity Gala for International Women's Club of Lugano, at Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana of Lugano (CSI) & Passeggiata Musicale at Teatro Paravento Locarno. Past engagements include performances for Portogruaro Music Festival in Venice, International Academy of Music of Cagliari in Sardegna, the Swiss National Anthem for international marathon of StraLugano & Consulate of Italy in Lugano, Opera Scenes & Arias in Mendrisio Opera in Villa series and Bottesini Chamber Music Revival Project.
Ms. Mazi has completed postgraduate studies in Master of Advanced Studies in Music Performance & Interpretation specializing in bel canto and verismo dramatic coloratura repertory at Scuola universitaria di Musica del Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano. She completed ERASMUS European Opera Academy in Bel Canto Module at Conservatorio di Music Luigi Cherubini in Florence and a Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy specializing in operatic singing. Ms. Mazi has worked on title roles of Anna Bolena in Donizetti's Anna Bolena, Lucia in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Elvira in Verdi's Ernani, Leonora in Verdi's Il Trovatore, Adrianna Lecouvreur in Cilea's Adrianna Lecouvreur, Mimi & Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème and Madama Butterfly in Puccini's Madama Butterfly. She completed studies at Scuola dell’Opera Italiana Fiorenza Cedolins (SOI), with the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts under the Professional Development for Artists program. In SOI, she has performed Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte at Palazzo dell'Academia Filarmonica di Torino in Turin, Italy and at Associazione degli Amici del Loggione del Teatro della Scala in Milan.
Ms. Mazi graduated from University of Toronto with a Double Major in Classical Voice and Neuroscience. She was the first student in the Faculty of Music in University of Toronto to have completed a Neuroscience Major alongside her classical music studies. In Toronto, she performed with Contemporary Music Ensemble at Arts and Letters Club of Toronto. Ms. Mazi continued her vocal studies at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and was a Young Artist with Opera America Manhattan School of Music Program in New York and Vienna Language of Lieder Program in Austria.
Ms. Mazi is a recipient of The Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation for Young Canadian Opera Singers Grant, Canada Council for the Arts Professional Development for Artists Grant Program, University of Toronto Undergraduate Association Grant, Italian Cultural Institute of Toronto in Italian Language Study Abroad Grant for Italian Studies at Michelangelo Instituto Firenze, and Vienna Language of Lieder Program Scholarship.
In addition to her vocal talents, Ms. Mazi plays piano, speaks Italian, is a creative writer, and enjoys running. She has written articles titled “Vivere la vita attraverso la musica di Giacomo Puccini come soprano” e "L'Immortalità dell'Opera attraverso l'eredità di Giuseppe Verdi e Maria Callas" found in the magazine MIAMEATALY.
